:: about us

What is The Mercantile?

Founded in 2002, The Mercantile is a multi-store home, farm and ranch retail chain, headquartered in Bridgeport, Nebraska. After the closure of Quality Stores, Inc. in 2001, most areas in western Nebraska were left without a local source for farm and ranch supplies.

Our owners are working farmers and ranchers in the high plains of western Nebraska. They use the supplies and equipment we sell, and know what products and brands our neighbors expect us to stock. We carry a huge assortment of agricultural, livestock and equestrian supplies, as well as western and work clothing and boots. We have a fully stocked hardware and tool department, along with automotive supplies and tires, and a complete line of lawn and garden equipment and other outdoor power equipment.

We believe in the golden rule. We take care of our customers the way we want to be treated when we go shopping. No “big-box” attitude here. We focus on quality products, fair prices and customer service. The Mercantile's motto is “Sharing Values with Neighbors.”

We believe in the power of knowledgeable employees and promote training and development of our employees so they can provide practical advice to our customers. Our staff knows your business, because we are in the same business.

Our growth has been driven by our need to create the buying power necessary to provide the genuine value we deliver to our customers today.

Who are our Customers?

Farmers, ranchers and people who enjoy the rural lifestyle are our primary customers.

In some areas, where production agriculture has become less prevalent due to urbanization, we serve part-time and hobby farmers, suburban and rural homeowners, and folks who have horses, dogs, cats and other animals as pets. These customers have a similar need for many of the products we carry in our traditional agriculture-based stores.

We recognize that women play a hugely important role as customers in our stores. In many cases they are the primary “decision maker.” As such, we have tailored our stores' interiors, aisles and customer service to meet their particular expectations.

Our stores are bright, clean, and well-organized. We are always happy to offer carry-out service and provide expert assistance and seasoned advice about the products we stock.

Where are The Mercantile stores located?

We currently have eleven stores located in communities across northeastern Colorado, western Nebraska, southeast Wyoming, and southwest South Dakota where farming and ranching is the significant industry in the area.

Each store is scaled to fit the market area it services. Our stores range in size from 12,000 square feet to over 40,000 square feet. In all of our facilities, we have invested in significant upgrades to make our stores a pleasure to shop and to ensure we provide a great customer experience for the entire family.

What products does The Mercantile offer?

We carry a product selection ranging from fence supplies and pet food to lawn tractors and clothing to hardware and tools. Our customers can find just about everything they need to take care of their farms, ranches, homes, livestock, horses and pets and themselves.

While we have a basic inventory set for each store, we recognize the special geographic needs of each location and unique local customer mix that requires the addition of particular items to each store's inventory to accommodate those needs. As such, we believe each store has a unique “personality.” Click here to learn more about our stores.
